Rank is earned by rigorous testing and it is not uncommon for students to fail a test and retake it after additional training.  We have not ever and will not "give" anyone rank in Chuan Fa Kenpo; it is earned through hard work, determination and skill mastery.  Our instructors will evaluate your strengths and find your weaknesses then help you improve all of your self defense skills. A student who has never failed; has never really been tested.

Rank Structure
White Belt:
The white belt signifies the beginning point of learning like a white canvas to a painter with endless possibilities.  The student learns the history, customs and etiquette of the martial arts.  In addition, the first skills of blocking, punching, kicking, and self protection against throws and falls are taught.

White Belt Advanced: Add Purple Stripe (60 days)
The student has learned the basic strikes, kicks, blocks and self protection skills required to move on to more rigorous training.

Purple Belt: (90-120 days)
The student learns how to combine multiple strikes, blocks and kicks and use them to defend against the most basic self defense situations.

Blue Belt: (180-270 days)
The student learns to use throws, sweeps and takedowns to defend against more aggressive attacks like multiple punches and kicks.

Green Belt: (1 year)
The student learns to use more complex strikes, kicks and throws to defend and disarm attackers using blunt force weapons like pipes and clubs.

Brown Belt: (1 year)
The student applies all prior skills and begins to adapt their own strengths and incorporate them into defenses against more aggressive attackers using rapid sets of strikes, punches and takedowns as well as the use of edged weapons.

Black Belt: (1 year)
The student must take all acquired skills and employ them in a series of demanding scenarios where the attackers can be armed, unarmed, attack in groups, and use unconventional attacks to confuse and disorient the black belt candidate simulating the conditions that are present in actual self defense situations outside the classroom environment.

White Crane Tai Chi Chuan

The Chinese characters for Tai Chi Chuan can be translated as the 'Supreme Ultimate Force'. The notion of 'supreme ultimate' is often associated with the Chinese concept of yin-yang, the notion that one can see a dynamic duality (male/female, active/passive, dark/light, forceful/yielding, etc.) in all things. 'Force' (or, more literally, 'fist') can be thought of here as the means or way of achieving this ying-yang, or 'supreme-ultimate' discipline.   Tai Chi, as it is practiced in the west today, can perhaps best be thought of as a moving form of yoga and meditation combined.

There are a number of so- called forms (sometimes also called 'sets') which consist of a sequence of movements. Many of these movements are originally derived from the martial arts (and perhaps even more ancestrally than that, from the natural movements of animals and birds) although the way they are performed in Tai Chi is slowly, softly and gracefully with smooth and even transitions between them. For many practicioners the focus in doing them is not, first and foremost, martial, but as a meditative exercise for the body. For others the combat aspects of Tai Chi are of considerable interest. In Chinese philosophy and medicine there exists the concept of 'chi', a vital force that animates the body.

One of the avowed aims of Tai Chi is to foster the circulation of this 'chi' within the body, the belief being that by doing so the health and vitality of the person are enhanced. This 'chi' circulates in patterns that are close related to the nervous and vascular system and thus the notion is closely connected with that of the practice of acupuncture and other oriental healing arts. Another aim of Tai Chi is to foster a calm and tranquil mind, focused on the precise execution of these exercises. Learning to do them correctly provides a practical avenue for learning about such things as balance, alignment, fine-scale motor control, rhythm of movement, the genesis of movement from the body's vital center, and so on. Thus the practice of Tai Chi can in some measure contribute to being able to better stand, walk, move, run, etc. in other spheres of life as well. Many practitioners notice benefits in terms of correcting poor postural, alignment or movement patterns which can contribute to tension or injury. Furthermore the meditative nature of the exercises is calming and relaxing in and of itself.

Because the Tai Chi movements have their origins in the martial arts, practicing them does have some martial applications. In a two-person exercise called 'push-hands' Tai Chi principles are developed in terms of being sensitive to and responsive of another person's 'chi' or vital energy. It is also an opportunity to employ some of the martial aspects of Tai Chi in a kind of slow-tempo combat. Long-time practitioners of Tai Chi who are so-inclined can become very adept at martial arts. The emphasis in Tai Chi is on being able to channel potentially destructive energy (in the form of a kick or a punch) away from one in a manner that will dissipate the energy or send it in a direction where it is no longer a danger.

Qi Gong

The Qi Gong program consists of 12 specific breathing and stretching exercises designed to promote health and homeostasis.  The exercises work in a symbiotic way to enhance the function of the body without adding stress to the joints or musculature. These exercises are performed standing an seated to improve balance, coordination, flexibility and overall circulation.

Self Defense for Women

Picture
The Self Defense Course for Women is a new program that the association is bringing to Pensacola. While new to Pensacola, the course has been taught with regularity in Atlanta for many years. The program is designed to help women gain a better understanding of what muggers, rapists and other assailants look for in a victim. By understanding the characteristics of the attacker, women can help prevent and better react to dangerous situations. Most self defense courses for women last for 1-7 days and leave women with some good information but few lasting skills or techniques that will be applicable when needed. Our emphasis is on continuing classes that improve awareness, mental attitude, self confidence and foster a safe and practical training environment. The course will focus on saftey training for women ages 13-and up (Children under 13 may be admitted at the instructors discretion). This is a perfect mother-daughter activity that may save your life someday.

How to choose a school and teacher.
Schools:
What is the primary focus of training? ie.  self defense, tournaments, sporting competition, etc.
What is the history of the style?  ie. Hard style versus Soft, Chinese, Japanese, Israeli, Brazillian
What are the physical requirements? ie. Conditioning, flexibility, expensive equipment
What type of location? Private facility, commercial facility, community center

Instructors:
How many instructors are present in class?
What is the experience level of each instructor?
What is the age of the instructors?
Have the instructors had a criminal background screening?
Are the instructors certified by any national training association?
What are the costs for private instructions?
How long does it take to become an instructor?
What first aid training is required?

Tips for Beginners:
1. Talk to as many schools as possible and ask "Dumb" questions because good teachers expect beginners to ask simple questions and are patient with beginners.
2. Find out who will actually be teaching you.  Many schools have high ranking black belts but you may find yourself in a class with a person teaching who is not him/herself a black belt.
3. NEVER sign a contract that requires you to continue to pay for lessons for extended periods of time even if you quit. (Military: ask for a PCS or Deployment Clause to release you if you move)
4. Never leave your minor child alone with a new instructor or allow them to take private lessons at the personal residence of an instructor without your presence.
5. Do not allow the school to set up electronic drafts from your account.  Pay them with cash or check each month.
6. How often is testing and what is the cost?  Some schools charge a low monthly fee then hit you with a $250 testing fee and test you every 3 months.  The cost can rise faster than your rank!
7. Instructors are people with bills, in-laws and problems just like everyone else so don't confuse good martial skill with good life skills because some of the best martial artists are often not good decision makers in interpersonal matters.
8. Good teachers have a special blend of confidence and humility. Look for equal parts of both.
9. Watch the beginner class and then go back for the advanced black belt class because it is a showcase of what you will become if you stay with the style.
10. Ask the instructor what the pass/fail % is in their testing at various ranks.  If no one has ever failed a test, (easy way to find out, ask a few junior black belts which test they failed) then the school is probably a belt mill and you will be throwing money away and learning little to be proud of later.
11. Religion has a place and it is not in a martial arts school.  Some schools are used to recruit children into the predominant religion of the school.  There is nothing wrong with expressing your beliefs so long as you do it outside the classroom.
